With the Earth running short of natural energy resources the Jupiter mission to colonize and exploit Alpha Prime seems to be the only chance of survival. Professor John Robinson ('William Hurt' ) together with his wife Maureen, his family and fighter pilot Don West (lead a desperate attempt to create a Hyper-Gate in orbit around the planet Alpha Prime to enable the rescue of Earth to begin. However, others have different reasons for reaching Alpha Prime and Dr. Smith sabotages the Jupiter 2 but fails to get clear and becomes an unwelcome stowaway aboard the ship. To escape the gravitational pull of the sun the Hyper-Drive is fired and the Jupiter 2, after a trip through hyperspace, emerges into a completely unknown part of the galaxy. A search of the star charts reveals that they are completely lost in an uncharted sector of space but this is only the beginning of their problems... In the year 2058, the Earth will soon be uninhabitable after the irreversible effects of pollution and global warming! Professor John Robinson, lead scientist of the Jupiter 2 Mission, will lead his family to the habitable planet Alpha Prime to prep it for colonization. The Jupiter 2 is equipped with a hyperdrive that allows faster-than-light travel, which will eventually be employed to evacuate the citizens of Earth. However hypergates must be constructed on Earth and Alpha Prime to provide stable points of departure and arrival. Dr. Zachary Smith is bribed by a terrorist organization to sabotage the mission, and ends up an unwilling stowaway as the ship blasts off. I was not impressed with the majority of 90's movies based on 60's TV shows that we had to put up with. Two of the really bad offerings were The Saint starring the usually talented Val Kilmer and the abysmal Avengers movie. Neither of these movies did the original TV series any justice. Lost In Space was the same.

Lost In Space was far too serious. If you're going to do a film based on an original 60's TV show then you need to remain as faithful as you can to the series you are adapting. I'm not talking about special effects or the like, I'm talking about plot of which Lost In Space didn't have much.

There were a few exciting scenes but overall, Lost In Space was a weak film. A lot of young movie fans out there won't have watched the original TV series Lost In Space and after watching this movie, they probably won't even try and track down the original TV series.

Maybe I am being too hard but don't bother watching this and try and track down the original series instead. When I went to see Lost in Space in 1998, I was really excited because I thought that the cast was outstanding, and I had seen some shots from the making of it a few months earlier. At the end of the film, I just shook my head and laughed. I could not believe how stupid the movie was. I have not read anything about the production of the film, but I think that it must have been rushed to the box office because the editing was terrible and the movie seemed unpolished in general. It seemed to me that they ran out of time and just threw the movie out there in hopes that it would do well. The actors all do their jobs well, but I bet that they were disappointed with the post-production part of the film. The whole thing is fun for 11-year-olds of all ages. SImple answer - it's not Matt Le Blanc under the helmet. Because the actor was also busy filming the TV series "Friends" at the same time as making this movie, a double was used for this sequence to allow for some flexibility in the actor's schedule.

Also, because he's a military officer, his helmet is more advanced and protective than the ones used by the Robinsons.
